Your opinion about Bill Gates and John Green Discuss Agriculture
Check this out- we do not have anything interesting today.
vlogbrothers- Special bonus video! If we raise $100,000 to get clean water to people in Ethiopia, BILL GATES WILL MATCH IT WITH ANOTHER $100,000: http://water.org/johngreen
Sarkastic Chik- God, I feel like such an idiot because I don't understand any economics.
Naryan Robinson- I'm going to mention this again here because I want it to get voted up and for people to see it.Can we get John to ask Bill why he invested $23m buying half a million Monsanto shares? Please, *please* vote this up and keep asking this question because it could be crucial in the lives of millions of Africans in the near future.
betheothergirl- Agriculture is my field of study. I'm so happy to see it discussed by big Youtubers. It's often an ignored topic, but its so important to our every day lives. A lot of people in the West aren't involved with it at all and know nothing about it. So thanks.
FUS RO DAH- The hate against the GMO's or hybrid crops is idiotic, well guess what GMO's are the reason why you get food everyday and your countries are able export them. One of the prime examples why GMO's were a success is India before 1960 India wasn't able to feed their ever growing population but green revolution helped them big time, they now have enough food for their population and are able to export their surpluses. That's Ethiopia needs GMO's which are made in their own countries.
ZelNel5555- John, is Bill Gates your new best buddy? Cause if so, then you have a very cool new best buddy.
DynamicUnreal- What Bill Gates talked about is something that the current government of the Dominican Republic is doing. They are giving government loans to anyone that has land and can grow food at a very attractive 5% annual interest that is only there to counteract inflation and administration costs. Each group of local farmers gets a government paid accountant and agricultural consultant that help them get the most production out of their land. Also, the current administration has almost doubled the amount of schools and teachers in just 2 years and is currently on their way to providing a full 8 hours a day of school to a majority of the students (with proper lunches served from local businesses). I'm feeling positive about my country of birth.
Amy Ramirez- "Special bonus video! If we raise $100,000 to get clean water to people in Ethiopia, BILL GATES WILL MATCH IT WITH ANOTHER $100,000" ...... Are you freaking serious Gates?! Your a fcking billionaire, 100,000 is nothing but a tiny fraction of the billions of dollars you have... But you know i guess we should be happy about what we get, not hate.. So im sorry if i sound stupid..
jerrybronham- It's cool that White America is tapping into its guilt to help Africa but when is White America going to look inward and help its own citizens?
pete275- aren't these the seeds that lock the farmers into buying seeds forever because the crops are seedless and the land becomes inhospitable to other crops overtime?
Gabriel Rangel- Doesn't providing better seeds make underdeveloped countries dependent on first world companies? A lot alike what's happened to india.
Roscoe Kane- Better seeds = genetically modified organisms? Also, for people who have a problem with genetically modified organisms, it's not as bad as starvation. Genetically modified organisms is a new technology, but accomplishes the same goal as hybridization and selective breeding, it just works better. Yes, chainsaws do have risks and impacts axes do not, but they are still better.
789french5- Why doesn't Bill Gates throw his 60+ billion dollars towards renewable energies and other solutions for climate change?
Lucas Merat- Everyone donate at least a little to the link in the description! I just gave $5. If we all pitch in just a little it can be matched by Bill gates! Were part of an awesome community. Let's give just a little and make a big difference.
Seymour Butts- By seed research does he mean GMO monsanto seeds?
Cellar Door- Who's gill bates?
Huntthegreat- I'm glad Bill Gates is one of those wealthy people who *actually* put effort into helping the less fortunate, rather than just donating a lot of cash in order to boost his ego.
Valerie nelson- if everyone was vegan and there was no more animal agriculture we could feed the world 2 times over
John Stynes- After reading through these comments I now have a new favourite response anytime I ever see someone stating a comment which is clearly just trolling and inciting anger with misinformation, which is "Citation Needed". Nice chat there, I'd love to know how long the whole video was and hear any of the other points that Gates had to bring light to.
Conjecture- John, this is so amazing. Thank you for bringing us this important and interesting information (and it looks like a college produced it or something!).
Katherine Oung- SO COOL!
BaboGaming HD- He has biljons of dollars and stil we need to give money if i had alot of money like bill then i wut give at least 1 bijon
Moonlit History- Did gates say hybrid seeds? Monsanto? Nyeh.
GregTom2- Dear nerdfighteria... I just had a thought:Why can't children vote? The USA funds large programs such as medicare that help elderly americans afford treatment. Pregnant women and parents of young children, however, must insure themselves if they want their medical needs to be cared for.Does it make sense that a familly of four children gets 1/3 votes per person, while the elderly and the grumpy conservatives bachelors who say the governement spends too much both get one vote per person?I'm not saying that the medical needs of the elderly should be deprioritized, but the WHO Millennium Development Goals talk of maternal health, and of children mortality, not of elderly care.Wouldn't it make more sense to invest on the next generation, rather than the previous one? Wouldn't it make more sense to get rid of this democratic imbalance of power between younger and older human beings?
Captain Gothnog- I wish that, instead of continuing with the old single crop, factory farm model, they transition them over to a localized permaculture model, where each area grew their own food. It would mean personal investment, less cost for transportation, and fair distribution. The right permaculture model would also make them more resistant to drought conditions, and remove the need of having to purchase seeds and fertilizer each year.Work smarter, not more.
David Lowery- I think climate change is working for them as well. It makes the risk a bit more random.. But, the banks could be taking a measured risk year over year eventually resulting in the ability to weather a drought by slowly expanding their loans to make farms modern. Do a few one year and a few more the next. A farmer group could invest in machinery in a similar way.
SpazzyMcGee1337- Bill Gates said climate change is working against African agriculture. [Present Tense]To my knowledge climate change hasn't significantly affected African agriculture yet. I understand the necessity of making industrialized countries realize the consequences of their actions, but using future tense would do that and wouldn't be wrong.
Kitty Noire- and why aren't we doing this for the u.s.a? teach people how to grow their own food and go back to a simpler time when everything wasn't mass produced and alot of things will be better. the old saying goes Give a man to fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. we need to start teaching the younger generation better life skills rather then everything being given to you
loboalamo- GMO's are toxic. A search on GMO research will surprise you.
al destro- Who is this bill gates guy? Is he supposed to be a celebrity or something. I've never seen him before.
Jomar Villanueva- Farmers probably are the backbone of third world countries.
Lola Justice- Is it just me or does Bill Gates look like an older version of John?
Neil Richins- I like what you (John & Bill) are doing, education is a powerful thing. Are local people in Ethiopia involved in the seed research? I'd like to think some farmers keep using traditional seed replanting methodologies to diversify risk inherent in mono cropping with a single strand of hybrid seed. It would be even better if the local people in Ethiopia were involved in the cross-breeding and control of genes that has been fundamental to farming since well before the invention of corn.
Julian Kirby- We must also spread information on composting and mulching so as to increase water efficiency on crop land.
J Ram- Two of my biggest idols!
aslavine94- john where you in utter awe with bill gates
Koh Senescence- John, yes agriculture is a major concern in countries like these but I really dont see Bill Gates Initiative over there to necessarily be a good thing... His use of GMO crops (Bill Gates is highly invested in Monsanto) doesnt seem to be right. Many studies show that GMO crops do NOT produce a higher yield then non GMO crops, so why use them? As well as they are known to damage the soil they are planted in cause for even bigger issues and lets not even forget to mention that we dont fully understand the long term side effects of these GMOs. As someone ive always respected and looked up to i figured you would have more questions and concerns for such types of crops
Cat Vlogs- I haven't seen anyone point this out yet.Poor country's that are allayed with the USA are using the crops that they grow and sending almost all of it to the U.S. The U.S. Then uses it, not to feed themselves, but to feed their animals in slaughter houses. If every one stopped eating meat, these animals would not have to exist and those countries would be able to keep the good to feed them selves. Also, those extra animals would not overpopulate just like all wild animals once they have no threat from humans, they will find a small number of themselves once they don't to do bear many offspring. And please. Don't attack me in the comments, I'm just pointing something out.
Ryuu- bill gates still sounds like as if he is still in his 20s...
Diana Peña- Aren't agricultural corporations stealing farmland from Africans to make giant farms to feed livestock? Land stolen from hungry people without compensation all to give us more burgers. Stop eating meat!http://www.nationalgeographic.com/foodfeatures/land-grab/
